A white blood cell. White blood cells help fight disease and bacteria, so when someone has a "high white blood cell count," they are usually sick or infected. This count, along with symptoms, is usually a good indicator of if someone has mono or not.

A cell count of someone with mono.

"Schematic representation of a blood smear as seen through a microscope; unusual number of monocytes [white blood cells] and macrophages [pathogen-cleaners] would suggest mononucleosis; smaller disk-shaped cells are erythrocytes [red blood cells]."
